Patient Support Strategies

Patient education is a critical component of successful management of CRSwNP, including setting patient expectations, establishing a daily sinus care routine, and demonstrating proper technique for delivery of intranasal corticosteroids (INCS).1 It is important to emphasize to patients that CRSwNP is a chronic condition that can be managed but rarely cured, and the goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, and improve quality of life.1

Although most patients with CRSwNP do experience symptom relief with INCS, adherence is often poor.3 Adherence, technique, and other barriers to medication use should be addressed at each visit.1

Shared decision-making between clinicians and patients is crucial, especially given the variety of treatment options for CRSwNP without universally accepted guidelines.1,4 The best treatment option for a given patient may vary and can depend on which symptoms are most bothersome, the patient’s goals for treatment, and the particular risks and benefits of each option.4
